Tedder Hedgerow waits at the far end of the Prancing Pony bar in Bree. His riddle game is a one-shot conversation in the detailed route: he can ask up to five randomly selected riddles, with double-or-nothing progression. Wager the maximum 50 coins only when you are ready to use the answer key; five correct answers can return 800 coins.
| Riddle clue | Correct answer |
|---|---|
| Belongs to you, but others use it more | Your name |
| Deep in earth; beaten and burned into a killer | Iron |
| The more you take, the more you leave behind | Footsteps |
| Runs, murmurs, has a bed and mouth | A river |
| So fragile that saying its name breaks it | Silence |
| Life measured in hours; thin is quick, wind is foe | A candle |
| Appears at your feet and nearly perishes at midday | My shadow |
| Come at night uncalled and are lost by day | The stars |
| Must be kept after giving it to someone | Your word |
| The more you have, the less you see | Darkness |
| Always hungry; a touched finger turns red | Fire |
Find Tedder before leaving Bree
Complete the opening conversations in the Prancing Pony, then walk toward the far end of the bar. Tedder is a Hobbit and riddle-game opponent rather than a standard combat or collection quest giver. Speak to him before selecting Fornost because the interaction is designed as early starting money.
The detailed legacy walkthrough says the game does not create a normal quest-log entry for this activity. Do not expect a marker or count it toward the fifteen completed side quests. Its result is the wager payout and the completed conversation.
Pause on the first prompt and match the complete idea, not one shared word. Several riddles mention time, darkness, or natural objects, so reading the full sentence prevents a rushed mistake.
Understand the wager progression
Tedder offers a wager and can continue through five questions. A correct answer allows double or nothing. The maximum starting wager is 50 coins in the documented route, and completing all five correctly produces up to 800 coins.
Because the conversation is treated as one-shot, do not begin while testing controls, skipping dialogue, or waiting for a co-op participant. Keep the answer list open at a readable size before accepting the first wager. On controller, move one selection at a time and reread the highlighted option before confirming.
If the riddle wording is slightly reformatted in Legacy Edition, use the identifying concept from the table. The answer “a river,” for example, belongs to the object that runs, murmurs, has a bed, and has a mouth.
Resolve the less obvious clues
The earth clue is Iron: ore is found below ground and becomes a weapon after being worked. The ownership clue is Your name because other people speak it more often. The fragile thing is Silence, broken by naming it aloud.
The footprint answer turns on “take”: every step taken leaves another footprint. The promise clue is Your word because giving it creates the obligation to keep it. The visibility clue is Darkness; increasing darkness reduces what can be seen.
For the time-based riddle, choose A candle. Its life is measured while it is consumed, a thin candle burns quickly, a thick one more slowly, and wind threatens the flame. “My shadow” follows at your feet and becomes faint around midday.
Protect the payout and continue the opening route
After the fifth correct answer, let the conversation finish and verify the silver total. Do not force-close during the hub save. Use the money for actual early needs—equipment requirements, recovery, or merchant opportunities—rather than buying every visible item.
Then finish Forewarned is Forearmed and Rowlie’s Gift, inspect all three heroes, and depart for Fornost. Tedder’s reward improves the opening, but it does not replace equipment distribution or defensive practice.
If Tedder no longer responds after an incomplete exchange, the detailed reference’s one-shot warning likely applies. Recover only through an earlier normal save if the payout matters; do not alter files between original AppID 32800 and Legacy Edition 2523770.
