Fornost is the first major field route in The Lord of the Rings: War in the North™ - Legacy Edition and an ideal chapter for learning how optional paths work. Prepare in Bree, explore Main Gate before advancing, free Beleram, use available war machines, loot the Battlements sorcerer for the first Cult of the Lidless Eye scroll, check the Outer Wards branch, and enter the citadel ready for Tharzog.
Bree checklist
Accept Forewarned is Forearmed, Rowlie's Gift, and Otto's Arsenal; check equipment and controls before departure.
Main Gate
Explore the right-side room, follow Eradan's trail interaction, inspect the underground route, and free Beleram.
Battlements
Use war machines while targets remain and loot the sorcerer who carries the first Lidless Eye scroll.
Outer Wards
Check the left fork and optional chest before the citadel; reorganize the fellowship before Tharzog.
Complete the Bree departure check
Speak with the relevant residents before selecting Fornost. Forewarned is Forearmed, Rowlie’s Gift, and Otto’s Arsenal are the current-route names to look for. Open the quest log after accepting them and confirm their descriptions rather than relying on a remembered title from the original release.
Review all three heroes. Equip usable weapons and armor, spend understood points, preserve recovery items, and make sure no character has an empty or obsolete slot. Set camera, target lock, subtitles, and controller prompts before leaving the hub. A configuration issue is easier to identify in Bree than during the first crowded approach.
If playing online, have every participant launch Legacy Edition AppID 2523770 on the same public build and difficulty. Run a short lobby check before entering the long route. Compatibility with retired AppID 32800 has not been documented.
Search Main Gate before following the objective
Clear immediate attackers without sprinting beyond the fellowship. Prioritize archers or controlling enemies, keep an exit lane, and revive before chasing a survivor. Once the area is stable, inspect the right-side room and let Eradan interact with the trail or secret clue identified by the current route.
Continue checking the underground branch instead of moving directly toward the obvious exit. The route includes a secret and a gilded chest in this part of Fornost. Confirm the actual discovery or loot state in the game; entering a room without triggering its interaction is not the same as completing it.
Free Beleram when the opportunity appears. His involvement connects to later summon counters and story progression, so pay attention to the prompt and resulting state. Do not use an old chapter timestamp as proof that the current save registered the event.
Work through the Battlements methodically
Mounted war machines are useful both for clearing their target lanes and for progress tied to siege-weapon kills. Use them while valid enemies remain, watch for threats approaching the operator, and leave the emplacement safely rather than staying after its lane is exhausted. In co-op, have another player protect the operator or call the next threat.
The Battlements sorcerer is tied to the first Cult of the Lidless Eye scroll in the current Legacy Edition completion route. Defeat the target, inspect the drop, and verify the quest or inventory state. Do not leave the zone on the assumption that an automatic pickup occurred.
Before advancing, heal the fellowship and review resources. A clean transition is more important than squeezing one extra ordinary drop from an unsafe position. If a counter matters, open Gameplay Stats after the checkpoint and record it without changing game files.
Clear the Outer Wards branch
At Outer Wards, inspect the left fork before committing to the main route. Current routing identifies a secret and chest along the optional path. Move as a group; an exploratory player who triggers another encounter can stretch the party beyond revive range.
Use Eradan to remove distant pressure, Andriel to stabilize clustered damage, and Farin to occupy close attackers. In solo, hot-swap only after leaving the current hero safe. The AI inherits the position and health you leave behind, so a panic switch in the middle of an attack can create a second problem.
Check loot for hero requirements and named armor. Store possible matching set pieces rather than selling from the field. Equip only clear upgrades while the route remains dangerous; close comparisons belong at the next stable point.
Prepare the citadel and Tharzog response
Enter the citadel with healing and essential skill resources available. Identify the attack that causes each failure: direct boss pressure, additional enemies, an unsafe revive, lost camera, or a long attack commitment. Change the matching response on the next attempt rather than rebuilding every hero at once.
Keep the party inside support range. Eradan should have a safe lane to important distant targets, Andriel needs time and space for healing or area effects, and Farin should stop close pressure from flowing freely into the back line. In co-op, name the revive responsibility and priority target before restarting.
After defeating Tharzog, allow the checkpoint and quest state to complete before exiting. Review the Lidless Eye scroll count, side work, discoveries, and equipment. A normal return to hub is safer than forcing a quit during autosave or Steam Cloud synchronization.
Verify the chapter before moving on
Use a short post-Fornost record: completed Bree quests, first scroll obtained, Beleram freed, secrets found, war-machine progress, and the last confirmed checkpoint. The exact statistic visible in the current game is the authority. A missing item should lead to checking the route and quest log, not copying old save files into AppID 2523770.
If an expected interaction did not register, return only through the normal travel or checkpoint options the game offers. Restart Steam and the game cleanly before changing settings. When a repeatable problem survives a clean run, record the chapter, host or guest role, visible build state, and steps for Aspyr support.
