Elf-stones are build upgrades, not inventory-cleanup tokens. Use one only after reading its current effect, confirming the eligible destination, and deciding that the item will remain useful. The best placement fixes a limitation already observed in combat—damage, durability, resource access, or another stated property—rather than filling the first empty socket.

Identify the receiving item before committing
Compare the current weapon or armor with likely near-term replacements. A small upgrade on a stable named set piece can produce value across multiple chapters; the same stone on a low-requirement item bought minutes before a major hub may be lost to normal progression.
Check hero restriction and attribute requirement. Do not upgrade an item the intended hero cannot equip. If the piece belongs to a companion, switch inventory view and verify that companion’s build has a reason to keep it.

Assign stones by fellowship role
Eradan benefits when an upgrade reinforces the bow-and-precision plan or solves a survivability issue that prevents him from maintaining a firing lane. Do not add offense if every attempt ends because melee enemies reach him before he can relocate.
Andriel values upgrades that help her remain active and deliver healing or area control at the required moment. A support item should be judged during a crowded wave, not only by a damage comparison in town. If resource availability is the limit, confirm that the stone’s stated property addresses it.
Farin can use an upgrade to support heavy melee, crossbow utility, or durability. Apply it after meeting the equipment threshold and deciding whether the piece belongs to the main campaign build or a temporary achievement-farm layout.
Avoid three common losses
First, do not socket from a full inventory simply to remove the stone. Sell ordinary loot or reorganize at a merchant. Scarcity and exact acquisition rates are not officially documented here, so preserve options.
Second, do not upgrade six unrelated yellow armor pieces under the assumption that color forms a set. Well-arrayed requires a shared family name across head, shoulders, body, gloves, leggings, and boots. Wait until the family is identified.
Third, do not use a stone immediately before comparing merchant stock. Finish the hub’s purchases, equip the final choice, and then reopen the upgrade. That sequence prevents the common case where the new item replaces the just-socketed one.
Test an effect with one controlled encounter
Record the hero, equipment, and problem before applying the stone. Afterward, return to a familiar encounter and repeat the same role. Look for the relevant outcome: fewer shots on the priority target, enough durability to finish a revive, or a skill remaining available for the second wave.
Do not change armor, weapon, skill allocation, and difficulty simultaneously. If several variables move, the stone’s value cannot be separated from the rest. A controlled comparison is especially useful before investing further stones into the same property.
If the display does not change as expected, exit the item screen and reopen it after the normal save completes. Capture the before and after item descriptions for support rather than repeatedly applying more upgrades.
Preserve the upgraded state across sessions
End at a normal checkpoint, exit Legacy Edition cleanly, and let Steam Cloud synchronize. In co-op, confirm who owns the upgraded item after any trade. Do not quit while it is on the ground or while the inventory state is changing.
